If you were going out with him for a longer time i would say he may be acting differently for a reason, but the fact you guys have been seeing each other for only a few months means he is probably just testing out the situation. and he is brave to say he loves you at all, text or not.

things are different out of no where = someone else has been added to the situation

If he truly meant it he wouldn't be a coward and say it over text, he would say it to your face.

I would say he doesn't love you but he wants you to love him and not be with anyone else. You could challenge him by saying: "if you love me so much why can't we see each other?" See what he says to that.
